I haven't blogged in awhile, in fear of me driving you all crazy with my health and exercise stuff, but then i thought, well i drive people crazy any way, so whats the difference??
Hearing about jack lalanne dying yesterday made me start thinking. wow, he lived his whole life exercising and eating healthy and yet he died???? I was watching the TODAY show today, they were showing the people who lived to be 100 or older, man they looked OLD! but here is jack who lived right all the time and yet he didn't even get a spot on the smackers today show lives past 100. Did you know jack was on the TODAY show for his 90th birthday, they had a big birthday cake for him and he didn't eat a piece. Jack, you are 90, eat a dang piece of cake!!! He never ate junk, he always exercised, he spent his life showing us how to exercise. Did you know when he introduced lifting weights, doctors said don't do it, it could cause a heart attack??? But jack showed us that not only was it not bad for us, but actually good for us. He made such a difference in peoples lives. As a personal trainer, i dream of making a difference in some ones live. What a great feeling i get when i watch my clients step on a scale and i see their reaction to losing weight, or as i watch clients who couldn't do a push up when we started, gives me 3 sets of 10. Im like a proud mama!!
any way, back to jack. So he didn't live to be 111 yrs old, but do you know what he did??? He lived each day to the fullest, taking care of the only body God gave him. He treated it like the gift it is. He felt good, he looked great and he seemed to enjoy every day. He was a good husband and father, His wife said He was her best friend. They weren't sitting in a nursing home wasting away, they were active. Right now i have an uncle dying in a nursing home. they are removing the feeding tube and letting him die. My uncle is 84, he has been in a nursing home for years, waiting and hoping to die. He is a widower because my aunt died at 58 years old from COPD, from years of smoking. I dare you to tell me taking care of yourself doesn't matter. I dare you to continue to eat bad, be sedentary, drink too much, smoke too much, and not be sorry in the end. Believe me friend, im not saying im a great example, i spent way too many years smoking, and eating bad. BUt the older i get the more i realize how important every day decisions are. I realize this is the only body i get, so i have to make a decision to take care of it or gamble just hoping all will turn out for the best with out me doing any thing good for my body. Pick my friend what you will choose to do, none of us are getting any younger. I want to tell you what happen to me when i decided to take care of myself. I have lupus and have had it for about 6 years. after eating healthy and organic when possible, after getting plenty of exercise and taking supplements and vitamins, i went off all my medicines and have never felt better. Im so thankful for that, for i don't know of one drug out there that doesn't have a list of side effects. im glad im med free for now.
So any way, Jack rest in peace. I bet your holding an exercise class right now up in heaven. Thank you for being an example to us fitness professionals, thank you for teaching americans how to care for our bodies. I could only dream of touching and influencing as many lives as you did. I wont, i know that, but some where along the line i hope i make a difference to just one.
A Better You

what i do......
i would like to share with you what i do with my personal training business. I have always liked exercise, the older i got the more i saw the need for it.I would get achy when i didnt exercise, i felt sluggish, tired and yep, as i got older i noticed my body needed exercise to look better. It became a passion for me, and i wanted to help others feel as good as i did from exercising, soooo, i went to school to get certified as a personal trainer, i enjoyed what i was learning so much that after i got that certification, i continued on to get my certification in nutrition. ( i still do hair, i like the idea of making people feel and look good from head to toe!)
I train people out of my basement, steve and i did some rearranging down there, laid a gym floor, mirrored a wall, painted and bought exercise equipment, and tadaa--- a gym!! I charge $30 an hour if you do a one on one session. If you and a friend do it together,i give you a $5.00 discount and its $25 a piece. Some people like bringing a friend, that way you have an accountablity partner and its more fun. I teach you how to exercise correctly,i push you to do the best that you can do,i dont scream at you, im not mean,im not jillian. That works on tv shows, not in real life.I want the best for you, i will encourage you, be your biggest fan,not humiliate you.
I weigh my clients when we start a program, I never tell a weight ( well except for deana's, she knew that going in to the program, it was the deal we had.) I measure you, again, no one but me and you knows the numbers. every week i weigh you to see progress, i measure you about every 6 weeks. I help you with a diet program, actually, its not a diet, its a life style. In the beginning, i have my clients email me their food journals every day. Yep, i see every thing you eat!!! I never yell at you for poor choices, i just want to know what you are eating so we can tweak things when they go astray. But the other thing the food journal does is let YOU see what you are putting in your mouth, sometimes its a eye opener.
I do have some clients who dont care about losing weight, they exercise to be healthy and toned. Those clients dont mail me a journal. But no matter how you decide to train, i encourage you and work the way that works best for you. I always like to give tips and ideas,i try to keep things exciting by doing extra and new exercises all the time. I do this to make you feel good about yourself. I love when my clients learn to like themselves again. There is no greater job than making people love themselves, to make people feel good, inside and outside. I love when clients tell me their back no longer hurts, that they feel stronger, that they love their arms again, that they have more energy. This is why i do what i do.
Theres a few ideas i have been throwing around for the new year, i would like to get one day a week, maybe saturdays at 9 am and get about 6 people and charge $8 a class and have them come here for an hour of fun exercising. I have been thinking about have a nutrition dicussion hour where we get people together and shot ideas off each other, to see if we could all help each other out with fresh ideas etc. One more thing i would like to mention is that some of my clients come every 4 weeks or so, i train them for an hour write down every thing we do, they take that home with them and do it at home for the month and comes back to get another work out. ( this cost $35) That way you exercise when you want and it saves you money, however, this only works for people who are disciplined to do it at home. Some clients comes once a week, some comes 2 times a week and i also have one client who comes 3 times a week. I will work with you to fit your needs.
Well i just wanted you to know what i do, i have had people say to me, i would love to be trained, but im afraid. I work at your pace and i push only when you are ready. I live in arnold, if any of you are thinking about getting fit this year and need a trainer, i would love to help you. Call me at 314-580-1999, if you are interested. May you have a blessed, healthy new year!!!

THANKFUL
Its that time of year when we all think about what we are thankful for. I bet every one of us are thankful for our health, for our bodies that get us where we need to be and function the way its suppose to. We may not all be happy with the way our body looks, but thats a whole other blog!!!
Now i have a question for you, how well do you take care of your body, your health, your mind and well being?? I know, i hear it all the time, you would exercise if you had more hours in a day, you would eat healthier if it was cheaper and more convenient, blah, bhal blah! If 24 hours in one day isnt enough, why would 30 hours be enough? We would only fill those hours with other things we do now and still complain. Here's the deal,if you would spend 30 minutes a day exercising, you would feel so much better. Ask anyone who does it, i dare you. Ask some one who eats healthy if they feel better. It's a fact, you will!!!!! You do not have to run 10 miles a day or power lift, you just have to move and get your heart rate up. I love the people who complains they never have time to exercise but will tell me about several tv shows they watch. HELLO, if you have time to sit in front of a tv, EXERCISE while you are doing it!!! What about the choices you're making with your food. Do you eat lots of fried foods, lots of sugar, chemicals, trans fats?? Do you know what that does to your arteries, your insulin levels, your weight??? But yet people complain about our health care, wondering for how long we will have it, how much it will cost etc. Here's an idea, take care of yourself now,so hopefully you wont need to use the health care so much. Do you rest properly?? Its very important for you to rest, get your sleep. You'll feel better, you'll look better and you will be more alert.
Just a few thought for all of you who are thankful for your health. Please dont take it for granted, its such a gift. You never will know how long you will have it, so do what you can to preserve it. If you haven't taken care of yourself, its not to late to start. Dont wait til jan 1st, dont wait til next monday, not even tomorrow, start now!! You are so worth it!!!

Food manufacturers think you're stupid. In fact, they’re banking on it. Why else would Hershey’s put a ribbon on the Good & Plenty box that says “A fat-free candy.” Sure, it's true—no fat in the box—but it's also very misleading. The candy is essentially 100 percent sugar and processed carbs. And Hershey knows the average American equates fat-free with being good for you.
Another example: Between 2005 and 2008, as the organic movement gathered steam, the prevalence of “simple” or “simply” on food labels increased by 65 percent. Food marketers pinpointed how our expectations were changing, and began using that knowledge to keep us buying unhealthy processed foods.
1. The average American has easy access to 2,700 calories each day, according to the USDA, versus just 2,200 in 1970. That food is on their plates and in their refrigerators, or neatly lining the vending machines at work. In other words, potential calories are everywhere. And studies show a direct correlation between food exposure and consumption. If 500 calories a day doesn't sound like much, consider: that’s 52 pounds a year.
2. The average American drinks 450 liquid calories a day. That’s twice as much as we consumed 30 years ago, according to researchers at the University of North Carolina. What’s to blame? Take your pick: sodas, energy drinks, lattes, bottled teas, milk shakes.
3. Fresh fruits and vegetables cost 10 times more than junk food, according to researchers at the University of Washington. A thousand calories of nutritious food cost $18.16, while a thousand calories of junk food cost a mere $1.76. How do they keep junk-food costs so low? Pretty simple, actually: flavor enhancers and other chemical additives. Speaking of . . .
4. There are more than 3,000 items on the FDA’s list of approved food additives—everything from acesulfame potassium (an artificial sweetner that animal studies have linked to breast cancer) to Yellow #5 (a food coloring linked to learning and concentration disorders in children).
5. Your food can legally contain maggots and rat poop. Sure, the FDA limits the amount of such appetite killers in your food, but that limit isn't zero. Trace amounts won’t make you sick, but the thought of them will.
6. Smaller portions are equally as satisfying as larger portions. Participants in a Penn State study ate macaroni and cheese over four different days, and when presented with bigger portions, they consumed an extra 160 calories. Despite the extra food, they rated their fullness the same.
7. Between 1977 and 1996, the average cheeseburger grew in size by 25 percent. In that same time, a bag of pretzels grew by 93 calories, according to analysis by researchers in North Carolina.
8. What do hamburgers and fertilizer have in common? Turns out, hamburgers—especially the stuff served at schools and fast food restaurants—are routinely treated with ammonia to kill off E. coli bacteria. That’s the same substance used in fertilizers and household cleaners.
9. There's a good chance chicken will make you sick. In a 2006 Consumer Reports review, more than 80 percent of whole broiler chickens bought nationwide contained campylobacter or salmonella—the leading causes of foodborne illness in America.
10. Junk food is like a drug. A study in the journal of Nature Neuroscience found that eating junk food doesn’t just satisfy cravings—it creates them. That’s right; junk food is addictive. That's why manufacturers load their foods with sugar, salt, and artificial flavorings, and why you should never forget the golden rule: If your food can go bad, it's good for you. If it can't go bad, it's bad for you.
11. Only 19 percent of what you pay for a food product actually goes toward the food itself. The rest pays for packaging, labor, and marketing, according to USDA data. Yet another reason to buy fresh, local ingredients.
12. Food companies pay “slotting fees” to supermarkets to ensure the best possible placement—an average of $70 per item, according to a 2004 government report. These fees are passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices. Pay less by shopping the tops and bottoms of the shelves; that’s where you’ll find brands that aren’t paying slotting fees.
13. The leanest cuts of meat may have the highest sodium levels. Leaner cuts by definition are less juicy. To counteract this, some manufacturers "enhance" turkey, chicken, and beef products by pumping them full of a liquid solution that contains water and salt.
14. Long checkout lines may make you fat. If you’re waiting to pay, you're up to 25 percent more likely to buy the candy and sodas around you, according to a recent study at the University of Arizona.
15. Calorie counts may be wrong. To ensure you're getting at least as much as you pay for, the FDA is more likely to penalize a food manufacturer for overstating the net weight of a product than understating it. As a result, manufacturers often package more food than the stated net weight or make servings heavier than the stated serving size weight.

FAD DIETS!!!
The grapefruit diet, the cabbage diet, the red wine diet..... the list goes on and on. So many types of diets, which is best??? The answer is simple, none of them. The is no magic diet or magic pill,if it was that simple over 60% of americans wouldnt be obese.
The healthy way to do it is eat less, exercise more. Its that simple. One pound has 3500 calories,to lose a pound you have to burn off 3500 extra calories. To gain a pound, you have to take in 3500 extra calories. Heres an example: walking or running 1 mile burns off about 100 calories. A banana has about 110 calories in it. Wow, so you jog a mile and think you get to eat more because you exercised. Wrong, thats why people dont lose weight. Just because you exercise doesnt mean you can eat more calories.
Okay, so we have fats, carbs, proteins. whats good, whats not good??? Its so confusing. A few years back, if you wanted to lose weight you just got all fat free foods. Your grocery cart was full of fat free cookies, smart ones frozen dinners, rice cakes, fat free salad dressings, fat free cheez its, etc. And we never lost weight and we would give up,right?? Why? Because thats the wrong way to diet, fat free foods add lots of sugars to their product so it taste better. So now what? Eat foods that are whole, fresh living foods. Eat produce, lean meats, dont be afraid of nuts, cheeses, peanut butter and olive oil. All these products have lots of vitamins, antioxidants, they are healthy, they fill you up,they are full of protein so they will keep you full longer. I know they say they have lots of fat in these foods but its the good fat the kind your body needs. Watch how many sugar grams you are taking in. Your body doesnt need much sugar, it will make the sugar it needs. If you have reached the age of about 35 or so, watch how many carbs you are taking in. About the age of 35 our bodies stop breaking down carbs the way it use to. Dont go without carbs, we need them, they provide energy to our bodies, and God knows we all need energy!! But choose healthy carbs, like whole grains, complex carbs, like fruits, veggies and you can even have potatoes in small amounts. These kind of carbs also provide fiber to your body and they will not spike your insulin levels, They are healthy and we need them!!
So if you are trying to lose weight, and you need a snack, dont go for the rice cake, theres nothing healthy in there. It wont keep you full or hold you over til dinner. Eat a handful of nuts, or an apple with peanut butter. You will stay full, you have now given your body nutrition instead of empty calories.

healing water
first of all, hide that halloween candy!! All those little nimbles, taste and bites are what gets us into trouble. Hide the candy bowl and put out a fruit bowl instead.
water, water water. Did you know your body needs at least 2 quarts of water a day? Thats how much we lose each day in sweat, urine and what we exhale. Its important to replace that water because our whole body is made up of water.the body is 70% water, the muscles are 75% water, brain cells are 85% water, blood is about 82% and bones about 25% water. We can live 5-7 weeks without food but only about 5 days without water.
Water is often an instant healer. When your body needs water,it lets you know in many different ways. Some people suffer with headaches, arthritis, skin problems, back pain, digestion problems etc. It also is the best way to flush out all the toxins in our body. And when it comes to trying to lose weight, we need lots and lots of water. so much water that you need to pee every half hour!!!! It will fill you up so you eat less.
Water is also so good for your skin and your hair.If your skin and hair feels dry, drink more water. They also claim it can prevent attention dificit disorder and help prevent memory loss. All this by drinking water!!!!!
Here's the thing though, tap water is not the way to go, it has chemicals in it. So, bottle water right??? Wrong!! Did you know bottled water is less regulated than tap water and can be just as toxic??? Since bottled water is considered a food, it is regulated under the food and drug administration, tap water is regulated under the Environmental protection agency. the only requirement is that is be as safe as tap water. So your best bet is a BPA free drinking bottle and FILTERED water. You can buy a britta water pitcher from target or walmart for about $25, it filters the water.
I highly recommend the book "the seven pillars of health" by don colbert. This is where i got most of this material.
Have a great day and drink water!!!!!!!!
water, water water.
